AI in interviews

high confidence

Amex bans AI tools in video and in-person interviews unless the interviewer explicitly allows them. Some technical assessments are built to test how well you use AI, but submitting AI output you didn't modify or can't explain is not allowed; practising with AI beforehand is fine.

Typical interview loop

How American Express usually runs it for applied AI and LLM engineer roles.

  1. Recruiter / hiring manager screen

    Focus: Background, project depth

A recruiter call on your background and the process, often followed by a phone screen with the hiring manager that digs into each project on your CV.

  2. Recorded video / online assessment (early careers)

    Focus: Communication, coding basics

Student and early-career tracks often start with a recorded HireVue-style video and, for tech roles, an online coding or technical assessment.

  3. Technical round: SQL, Python, stats, applied ML

    Focus: Applied ML, SQL

A technical interview that checks SQL and Python as a baseline, then spends more time on applied ML judgment such as handling imbalanced data, choosing models and explaining why.

  4. Business case / guesstimate round

    Focus: Structured business reasoning

You reason out loud through a credit-card business problem, such as a metric moving unexpectedly or a fraud or credit decision, sometimes alongside estimation or puzzle questions.

  5. Final panel / leadership round

    Focus: Fit, business sense

One-on-ones with team members, managers or a VP covering behavior and fit, how Amex makes money, and sometimes live coding, a quantitative round or a short presentation.
