AI in interviews

high confidence

Engineering candidates, including ML, are expected to use AI coding tools such as Copilot, Cursor or Claude in the AI-assisted coding round, and are told so in advance. Candidates report at least one later ML round, such as building a model, done without AI, so ask your recruiter which rounds allow it.

Typical interview loop

How Canva usually runs it for applied AI and LLM engineer roles.

  1. Recruiter call

    Focus: Background, technical basics

A video call with talent acquisition about your experience and goals; for engineering it includes some technical questions.

  2. AI-assisted coding

    Focus: AI judgment, working code

About an hour of pair coding in your own setup with an AI assistant on an open-ended, practical task, aiming for a tested, working solution while you explain your choices.

  3. ML coding without AI

    Focus: Hands-on ML fundamentals

A timed round where you implement an ML model or algorithm from first principles in plain Python, with no AI help.

  4. ML system design

    Focus: ML design trade-offs

An open-ended design of an ML-powered product feature, judged on practical trade-offs and mitigations more than textbook answers.

  5. Final interview: values and experience

    Focus: Values, communication

Part of a longer final block where you discuss past work and answer behavioural questions mapped to Canva's skills framework of craft, strategy, communication and leadership.
