AI in interviews

high confidence

No AI in live coding, technical assessments or any live interview unless you're told in advance; some roles have a pre-announced AI coding interview where AI use is expected and you must explain how you used it. AI is fine for take-home research and structure, résumés and prep, but must be disclosed.

Typical interview loop

How Datadog usually runs it for applied AI and LLM engineer roles.

  1. Initial screen

    Focus: Background, aspirations

A phone or Zoom call with the recruiter and sometimes the hiring manager about your background and what you want from the role.

  2. Technical phone screen

    Focus: DSA, practical coding

About an hour in CoderPad solving one or two algorithm problems that start familiar and then pick up practical twists.

  3. Live coding rounds

    Focus: Problem solving, thinking aloud

One or two hour-long onsite coding rounds (one fewer at Staff+), LeetCode-medium style but framed around Datadog-like data problems with follow-ups.

  4. AI-assisted coding (some roles)

    Focus: Working with AI tools

A pre-announced round where you're expected to code with AI tools and are judged on how well you steer them and can explain your choices.

  5. System design and LLM/agent design

    Focus: Distributed systems, LLM architecture

A backend design round on services, data flow and trade-offs; AI and ML engineer loops add a separate round on designing an agent or LLM-powered system end to end.

  6. Experience and values

    Focus: Ownership, values

An hour with a hiring manager or director on past projects, including what went wrong; Staff+ candidates present a past project, and some roles add a take-home or executive interview.
